Cost of Living Calculator

Equivalent salary across cities, metros, and countries

This page answers one question: if your gross pay buys a typical household basket in one place, what gross pay buys a similar basket in another? World cities use a stored metro cost index. U.S. metros also have BEA regional price parities. Countries use World Bank household consumption PPPs. You can pick two world cities, two metros, two countries, or mix those lists. The result is in the destination currency.

Gross yearly pay in the origin currency, before tax. World cities, U.S. metros, and countries can be compared. City-to-city uses the stored cost index. Other pairs use purchasing-power factors.

Equivalent salary in London, United Kingdom

£82,781

Prices there are -8.0% versus New York, United States. Math: $90,000 × (172 ÷ 187).

Typical 1-bedroom rent in this file: $3,200 a month where you live, £2,200 a month where you would move. That is a stored estimate, not a live listing.

How equivalent salary is figured

Each place has a price level. Divide the destination level by the origin level, then multiply by your current gross pay. The answer is labeled in the destination currency.

World cities sit on one unofficial scale where 100 is a global average. New York is 187. London is 172. Austin is 119. Example baked into this page: $90,000 in New York becomes £82,781 in London. That is $90,000 × (172 ÷ 187).

U.S. metros can also use the BEA index, where the U.S. average is 100. New York in 2023 sits at 112.5. Austin sits at 97.6. The same $90,000 becomes $78,080 in the Austin metro. That is $90,000 × (97.6 ÷ 112.5). World-city New York to Austin uses a different scale, so the two answers are not the same number.

Countries use World Bank household PPP in local currency per international dollar. The same $90,000 in the New York BEA metro becomes £56,122 for the United Kingdom as a whole. That is a national figure, not Inner London rent.

What this page does not do

It does not subtract tax. An equivalent salary is still gross pay. Run take-home pay if you want a net estimate.

It does not count the drive. A cheaper index can vanish if parking is $18 a day. That is commute cost.

World-city indexes are a stored file, not a live Numbeo scrape and not an official statistical series. BEA and World Bank remain the official layers.

Cost of living FAQ

What does equivalent salary mean?
It is the gross pay that buys a similar household basket in the second place. World cities use the stored cost-index ratio. U.S. metros can also use BEA all-items indexes. Countries use World Bank household PPPs. It is not a job offer and not take-home pay.
Where do the city numbers come from?
World cities come from a stored metro cost index where 100 is a global average, plus a typical 1-bedroom rent in local currency. That file is unofficial. U.S. metros also come from the Bureau of Economic Analysis 2023 metropolitan all-items index, where the U.S. average is 100. Countries come from the World Bank PA.NUS.PRVT.PP series.
Why is New York not twice Austin?
The BEA all-items index blends rent with food, medical care, and other prices. Housing differs more than the blended index. The world-city list also shows a typical 1-bedroom rent from the same file.
Do you make a page for every city pair?
No. There is one calculator. Pick two places in the form. Query links are not in the sitemap.
Is London the same as the United Kingdom?
No. London is on the world-city list with its own cost index. The United Kingdom country row is a national World Bank PPP. You can compare them. That mix uses purchasing-power factors, not the city index alone.
